Really? While it might be, I wouldn't say it's certain. Calling a new settlement "New [something]" is hardly an original idea and Caprica is basically the most important planet of the Twelve Colonies. (I've always figured that the people from the other colonies might get pissed over the name though. "New Kobol" or something might've been a bit more democratic).

Saw the entire ten episodes of BSG 1980. It is simply awful stuff. But if you're a BSG fanatic, it's worth sitting through. It's only the length of half-a-season of the Re-imagined series. And if you've already seen every episode of BSG '78, you might as well take the plunge and see the '80 incarnation. Return of Starbuck is not bad, and The Night The Cylons Landed is amusing in that over-the-top-camp kinda way. But neither of those installments are enough to make up for the ill-conceived premise of BSG '80.

There was also an episode in RDM's BSG which cylon centurions boarded the Galactica and a shootout ensued. Similar event occured in one of Hatch's novels. DeSanto also featured a female president in the proposed FOX series. I still say RDM's BSG was 80% DeSanto and 20% Hatch. Bill Adama(Apollo), Saul Tigh(Starbuck), Lee Adama(Boxey/Troy), Kara Thrace(Dalton, daughter of Starbuck & Casseopia), Sharon Valari(Capt K'ross).

I'm too young to remember the series when it aired.

But during my school years about 10 years ago I remember the BBC repeated Battlestar Galactica. And they must have repeated Galactica 1980 too because the only episode of either show that I can recollect clearly is "The Return of Starbuck".

I've seen this show available on DVD, but I'm not tempted to buy or watch it. I've seen the odd few clips and I've read the synopses, but it's just not for me. But then again I'm not particularly a fan of 80s American TV. I think the 80s was a good decade for sci-fi in movies, but for sci-fi in TV it wasn't so good.

Can't leave Galactica 1980 alone, sorry. It was a real stinker. Still, it's worth strapping yourself in and watching, only to laugh at it. TOS was bad enough, but there was usually a decent story behind the episodes, once you chipped away layers of cheese and unnecessary cuteness.

But Galactica 1980 was bad all the way through, it makes other bad sci-fi of the era look good. The problem that sci-fi shows had in that era was that the network producers assumed that sci-fi = kids show, but that's not the sci-fi market. And the execs don't even know how to appeal to kids. Kids really don't need things dumbed down, they are quite good at learning. Plus, the kid who shows up all the adults tends to turn off adults while not actually appealing to kids. Kids don't look up to kids their own age.

and cheesy special effects.
Forgive me but I do not worship CGI special effects. I think the best filmmakers can do is to mix two techniques - miniatures and computer generated graphics. None of the virtual creations can match a properly made physical model. What is more - you have to put a lot of work into conventional special effects. On the other hand - computer generates great laser beams, backgrounds, shrapnel, space travel effects etc.

Galactica 1980 can damage your TV set and cause breast cancer in passing Chihuahuas. That said:

During one of my semi-monthly "cinematic golden-shower" moments, I was recently watching "When the Cylons Landed" on Hulu. There was an actor in a motherfucking clown suit (it was Halloween) driving a car. They pick up a Cylon and another human character.

Anyway, the actor-in-question's voice sounded exactly like the voice of KITT from Knight Rider. Turns out, it actually was William Daniels. (And why the hell am I even posting this useless bit of effluvia, anyhow?)

I would have forgotten that episode if you hadn't described it. Didn't they pick up the Cylon and take him to a party in an apartment somewhere? The guy also had a girlfriend. And it was one of those scenes that only works when someone makes a lot of assumptions to make up for they Cylon not saying anything.

I'm going to have to go back and watch the entire series again. It makes me laugh when every episode has the two cheesy warriors driving their motorcycles down the road, then having them take off and fly on their motorcycles.

I think there was an episode where some dorky kid sees one of the guys do something neat and he wants to tell his friends, but the guy convinces him that it has to be a secret between the two of them, and I think that gets the kid beat up or made fun of.
