Last week I went to my mother in law´s house on the coast to escape the madness that is Alcoy Fiestas. I had planned to have a break from the show and the forum for a week, but when I saw that she had a laptop, I thought I would have a look at what people were saying. At home it is easy, the link is on my desktop, but there I had to google a few times to fing the forum. While doing this, I discovered that there are hundreds of forums out there, and in a lot of them the exchange of ideas is not too friendly. A few of them I visited, it was like coming home to the wrong house by mistake. The decor was different but the food smelled better. But in others it was like taking a wrong turn into a dangerous neighbourhood. It was really soothing to finally get back to this forum with its soft chocolate and burgundy tones, and friendly welcome. What´s my point? dont know really, just wanted to say thanks, I suppose.

Oh don't be modest, be frank. We all are pretty sweet. :D No thanks are needed. It is all of us as a community that makes it great.

Yeah, I agree with you timbo. I saw other forums but this one has the bst climat :) Of course on Fridays and Saturdays I can't come into the forum because I don't wanna spoil anything because I usually watch the new episode on Sunday but coming back is always nice.
What's more, on the forum I moderate, all users have to really stick to the rules like correct writing, no off-top and all. Here it's totally different and I think more friendly (although my forum is one of the best from paranormal in Poland).
There are some people from different countries, so mistakes might happen. And off topic goes very often in some topics :D But this is what I like. There are maybe two BSG forums in PL and I must say that they are really boring. And here fun never stops :)

I love the friendly atmosphere. Rules are there just to keep the order, not to restrict us. Who cares about a spelling mistake or two? Sometimes they are quite amusing. :)

And I have to say, everybody is just plain pretty sweet on the forum. You guys make my life of moderating easy. :p

This was true before, but now, sometimes it is in the first two and sometimes, it doesnt appear at all at first. Then when you go back to the first page later, it is the last entry on page 1. You might want to check this out as it will affect how many people are aware of this forum. Although maybe it is perhaps because I am in Spain.

Timbo thank you for the kind words about the forum. Everyone works real hard to keep it a friendly and exciting place to virtually hang out.

Kudos to everyone.

Guys, gals, and Cylons thank you for your kind words -- and the fact that you are all respectful and kind to one another.

As Jonathan said, everyone here works steadfastly in keeping it a friendly and exciting place to hang out!

I'm very pleased at its progress, despite my initial misgivings.

Like some of you, I've been to various forums before and they've all pretty much turned toxic or withered away and died. (Or both.) And, no, I don't see that happening here, and that's because it's really due to all of us wanting to create a place that's warm, welcoming, and friendly, even if we occasionally disagree with one another. :P

Timbo, you SOB, I've had enough of you and your crazy theories on revealed cylons being RDM bait!!!! Spain sucks! They don't even have a team in Major League Baseball!!!! That earns the World Series trophey BTW!!!! Not to mention ping pong, football(I mean k*ckin' a** American football BTW)!, etc....<now where is that sarcastic button.....oh....F13)

Speaking of which, a keyboard doesn't have a F13, so does that mean that perhaps, (just <F13>, perhaps?!), there are 13 cylons!?

<unstick F13>
Seriously, tho, Timbo, you're one of my favourites, absolutely! I think perhaps, you think that sometimes you are just playing devil's advovcate, etc.; or that no one pays attention to a certain theory....BUT, I've sincerely enjoyed the back and forth. Nothing but praise from me....

First of all. you should know that the rest of the world s******s behind its hand that you have a "world series" just for american teams. Next, Spain is actually the world fiesta champion, and my humble hometown (pop60,000) swells to over a million for four days. Google Alcoy fiestas and take a look, its really something. They actually brought a sample over to New York last year. Now I think about it, maybe I love it because it is just as politically incorrect as BSG. It is a Moors and Christians thing, but they weren´t allowed to bring the Moors, for obvious reasons, and the archbishop of N.Y. said they should have.

Thanks man, I like your stuff too. Now to business. I swear I am not playing devils advocate. This has been going on for six weeks now and I have questioned my motives etc. but I honestly have no explanation for where this conviction came from or its strength. I am probably wrong, but it is what I believe. The show, the forum and having convictions is all new to me. All through the show, the lone, quiet voice has usually been right.

Okay, I promise I´ll have a look at that question later and let you know.

Actually, I think this is the wrong attitude. Typos are unavoidable, but bad grammar and spelling lead to ambiguity, fear and suffering. I mean, look at the state of this (http://www.battlestarforum.com/showthread.php?p=24547#post24547).

I think we need to lay down some ground rules before the new episodes are broadcast.

OMG that post you linked to is horrendous. I want to cry over the inhumanity. Please make it stop.

To that end ground rules are nice. I think we try to do our best on that front with general forum rules and whatnot. Play nice with others. Be kind. Share. Y'know...the kind of things your mom and dad told you as a child. Don't pinch. Don't bite. Don't cross the street without looking. Stranger Danger. Only YOU can prevent forest fires. Etc.

Jonathan: Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you found my post horrendous.

Scummy: This is sad really. I didn't know Darth was stopping people from crossing the street next to parked cars. That could potentially be dangerous! I hope he reminds people not to lick butterknives, too.

So, is this character a superhero? If so, it sounds like he would have had to be on the 70s version of antidepressants (ludes? coke?) to keep a straight face. From Vader to the Green Cross. WTF

You are welcome. I try to be as supportive of lazy posting or intentionally mis-spelled posting as possible. In either case there is much to gain for all. Isn't it nice to know the love flows so freely?

For me, the issue, (and here I am being serious) as to why the linked to post is so horrendous is that you, the poster, clearly have a plethora of intellect. I know that mis-spellings, syntax errors, and grammatical inaccuracies do not reflect one's intelligence. However, not everyone thinks on that wavelength. It is a fact, sadly, that mis-spellings, syntax errors, and grammatical inaccuracies reflect poorly on the one who makes those errors. But, even more important for me is they make it very difficult to understand what the poster is saying. They may have lots of valuable, well crafted, and enlightening ideas to share but getting past the barrier of errors is akin to the Mongols getting past the Great Wall. It is possible but takes some time and can prove to be quite difficult. Most readers won't or cannot get past the barrier.

A lot of people here, nay...all, are very intelligent people. They know so much on so many different issues. All have at least one thing of value to bring to this community. Getting to that can be problematic when that hard outer shell of errors is so flagrant.

This is exchange, and once again I must thank you because this is a learning opportunity, is a perfect example of what genji is talking about. Some basic rules, I had my tongue firmly implanted in my cheek in my previous post, such as using a spell checker are very important. Spell checkers are not perfect and sometimes they will make horrendous mistakes. But, more often than not they produce a correctly spelled word that at worst is a homonym, which allows the reader to more easily deduce the originally intended meaning.

That is progress, which allows all to more fully participate in the great discussions that happen here every single day. What sort of reasonable basic rules do you guys think we should have?

genji2000

If we're going to be serious about it then I'm not advocating any actual enforced rules, but I do believe that anyone who feels irked that a poster has taken neither the time nor the effort to re-read his comments and correct spelling, capitalisation, punctuation, etc., to ensure that his post can be quickly and easily understood by the reader, should be able to point this out without being called a dickhead. There are plenty of active contributors right now for whom English is not even their first language, but whose posts are expressed in English as well as, or even better than, Americans or Brits (haven't noticed any dodgy Aussies or Kiwis). It only takes a bit of effort to double check that your post makes sense.

How about everyone, myself included, takes a deep breath. Hold it. Let it out. A nice calming breath.

Now, let's rejoice in making fun of my poor musical tastes. When in doubt make fun of me. Seriously. I enjoy self-deprecating humor especially when I'm the butt of the jokes. So, let's head over to http://www.battlestarforum.com/showthread.php?t=70 and get to it.

:) I'm not actually worked up about it. I forgot the damn smiley faces as usual, and was going to try to rephrase that last post and drop the italics. I'm not into witch-hunts, especially not against people who have bothered to learn a second language, which is what I was trying to say.

Realistically there should be no rules to restrict people being welcomed on the forum, but likewise we shouldn't accept calling anyone who points out poor-posting a dickhead.

Are all these Harry Potter groups real? I suspected them of being figments of your imagination.

Yes. Kudos, hurrahs, congrats to those hardy souls for whom English is a second or foreign langugage who churn out their thoughts eloquently, diffidently, humorously.

I'm glad for the preview post button. Often in my case I disregard this only to realize the post went too wry or vinegary, and I want to bite myself after posting. I notice there's no delete button for a post. Guess there's a bit of self-reckoning involved. We take responsibility for our actions and there's no erasing of a flame or bad post even after we own up and fess. You takes your lumps (deliberate bad grammar) and live with it. I wonder if the edit button requiring 'a reason for editing' though is necessary though.

I 'nth' (as in second, third, etc) the mutual sentiment that this is indeed a warm, generous forum - accommodating us gadflies.

You don't have to complete the Reason for Editing if you don't want to. But it's there if you do.

You can delete your own posts. Click Edit, click Go Advanced, near the top you can select Delete This Post and include a Reason for Deletion if you want to. Then I think you click Save, as if you were editing it. So a deletion is just a form of edit.
