OH ok that was the episode where they were helping civilian ships get to the planet for food cultivating .I must've missed the very end as the last thing I recalled from that episode was she was promoted to cag.

This is a strength of BSG's storytelling. They didn't show a pointless thing here. Lingering on her death itself was unnecessary and may very well have detracted from its impact. But it was made clear that Kat (which is just a short from of "Katraine") received a twice fatal dose of radiation. Her own radiation badge is black and then Helo's turns black too. And the whole scene with Adama drives home that she does in fact die.
The promotion to CAG is just posthumous. As much to honor Kat herself as making a gesture in front of all the pilots. Also, take a look at the pilots during the second to last scene: they are clearly mourning. Thrace actually puts up Kat's picture on the memorial wall directly after that, in the last scene of the episode.
Another "hint" are the sleeping pills Thrace gives her. Dying from radiation poisoning is very ugly and painful. Thrace offers her a painless way to die.

Hello Serentiy,
Thank you for the quik episode breakdown, I guess I was a tad tired towards the end of that episode because I recall all you've told me here but totally missed the concept until you enlightened me with it. WOW very high impact on my thoughts now :)
Thanks Again

There's only a thing a little disturbing in that episode there was no need to diminish her with a petty story of smuggling maybe the hidden cylons intruders themselves , her sacrifice seems like she was escaping , on the contrary if she did willingly with no other reason than her pride and honor , it would be a selfish reason in itself to make her human but yet an heroic decision , not a suicide

They needed something to explain her irrational anger.

Yeah I thought the smuggling story was a minor distraction, but it did a lot to explain her anger and confusion as well as her redemption at the end. Contrary to her criminal career, she died in a selfless act of sacrifice for others.
I was surprised that there was a strong negative reaction to this episode when it aired - I really liked it. Some people want every episode to be part of the serial, but this was a nice look at a secondary character that touched all the main characters. I also liked the effects and how the science of the episode was handled without too much technobabble - it seemed believable to me, as much as science fiction can be.

May have been because yet again the humans sent out Athena to do the dirty work. Made my blood boil.

Yeah that is true - they were dangling her off the balcony, weren't they? Still, she persisted, won the human's trust, became a member of the human crew with her own callsign...then freaked out and shot a Six trying to establish a shaky alliance between humans and cylons.
I can understand a mother being protective, but that was big and I can't imagine what the fallout will be this week.
Why isn't it 10pm yet? I am going to time travel into the future by taking a nap.

She didn't freak out, she eliminated a potential threat to her daughter, the future of the human race. Natalie deserved everything she got for doing that ludicrous looking around thing right before she spotted Hera.
