These, along with wrist computrons, were one of many inventions of Dr. Zee (who I think grew up to start selling Chryslers or something).

I think it's always funny how The Original Series fans always make fun on how this follow up series degraded the original and the flying bikes are always the spearpoint of the mocking. WELL, in fact these were made for an episode of The Original Series. It was for an episode which was pulled just before shooting. Glen Larson simply later used the bikes in Galactica 1980 because they were dusting away in storage.

In my opinion: I thought Galactica 1980 was super cool. Sure, it was a watered down version of the original, but as a kid you don't see that. For me at the time some Galactica was better than no Galactica!

I found a website once where someone had created a street legal replica of the bike form the series but i tried searching and didnt find it :(

LOL, those flying bikes are precisely why TNS should end as soon as the Galactica finds Earth. Hopefully a lesson was learned ;)
