Although I have yet to see "Cloverfield", I watched the trailer along YouTube:
The Future Begins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RllSZW_YLk8)

The redesigned Enterprise...
Anyone have any opinions or mixed feelings about this?

Well, frankly, I think we can do without Star Trek for a decade.
Also, I can't say that I'm really a J. J. Abrams' fan... he hasn't overly thrilled me with anything he's done. And all the really bad reviews I've heard about "Cloverfield" make me appreciate my decision not to see that movie in the theaters.
That said, I'm really indifferent to this Star Trek film, but I'm glad that they're really going back to Trek's roots. I've always preferred TOS over TNG (and DS9 over the other spinoffs), simply because it wasn't bogged down in the technobabble/politically correct/play-it-safe quagmire that Trek was thrown into.
As so long as they keep to the spirit of the characters and of the core spirit of the show, I won't object. After all, it's a franchise that needs to be rebuilt.

Yeah but let's be honest, we'll probably all see the Star Trek movie no matter how good or bad it is. My take on JJ Abrams is this - he knows how to attract hype, and his stuff usually turns out to be not quite as good as we thought. But I still don't think he's a bad director and producer, he's just not as good as he let's people believe. I saw Cloverfield. It was mediocre. It's most major flaw was that the camera was too shaky for visual comfort, but I can't find very many other faults. Didn't like the ending, but admitedly it was proper.

I am a fan of Abrams I hope he does well with it. I've really enjoyed Lost & Alias....except the last season when he was concentrating on Lost instead of Alias.

I saw the HD trailer yesterday. I liked that they are showing the building of the ship. That makes me wonder how they are going to do character background.

This will definitely do well. Not a Star Trek fan, but it looks good. What with the X-Files film returning, nostalgia and long time fans are truly being spoiled. Its not fair!! (lol)

Certain things make little sense, such as Chekov (who would be a child while the older Kirk, who is 10 years or so older than all except McCoy, Scotty and Spock) should even be in the cast. And I bore of ST except for the Re-mastered TOS and New Voyages, but Abrams has a better shot at getting this right as, say, RDM would.

To be honest, this movie could literally make or break Abrams career... he'd better get it right, or else the horde of Trekkers/Trekkies will EX-TER-MIN-ATE!

I like Abrams. Well, his work... I don't really know him. Fabulous job on the teaser trailer; it did exactly what it was supposed to. I'm a little leary about the movie, but for creating buzz, it's perfect.

There were complaints from Abrams and the others that they couldn't do rewrites during the strike. Now that the strike's over, they're going back and rewriting parts of the script, thus delaying the release.

I dunno, but this movie scares me. I'm afraid they are going to really frak things up with it, but I'm hoping it will be good. Oh I just have to point out, I never liked 'Enterprise.' That gets me in a lot of crap with some trekkies, so I'm just going to put that out there.

I'm not mad on the concept to be honest, the original series is over and they should just let it be, i have a horrible feeling its going to end up like the exorcist: the beginning.
If there was ever going to be any more star trek, I think deep space nine would be the way to go, theres a lot more substance that could be made out of that, and it'd also need to be set in the post voyager timeframe, because everything thats ever happened before that has been covered by either ent or references, there are few interesting new stories to be had there. Enterprise wasn't terrible, it was just unfortunate it aired at the same time as bsg, which it didn't have a chance against. Why they chose to do a xindi and not a romulan war arc is beyond me. But then again, had season 5 ever come into existance the show could have improved considerably, not just the fact that they would have brought in jeffry combs in as a permanent cast member, but also the fact that there would have been a lot of material to cover about the shaky early days of the federation.
J.J. abrahams is a good director/ producer, but somehow it just doesn't seem like the right project for him. Star trek just can't be aimed at your average viewer as the average viewer doesn't care who the director is and will instantly dismiss it for being a star trek film.

Over-all, ENT had better ratings over BSG (compare List of Nielsen ratings (RDM) (http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/List_of_Nielsen_ratings_%28RDM%29) with ENT's ratings (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/16/Star_Trek_Enterprise_ratings_chart.png)) but this is really due to the fact that ENT aired on a network channel whilst BSG did not (although there was an experiment where NBC tried airing "The Hand of God" and the "Kobol's Last Gleaming" two-parter, but it didn't garner the ratings it deserved).
