Ok. I am getting sick of the format war, but it's coming very appeart that one of these formats, HD DVD or BluRay are going to be the choices. However, if you had to get one right now, no questions asked, which one would you get? (Use the poll, and post your explain in the thread.)

HD-DVD. Particularly when most HD-DVDs have the combo feature: where one side is a regular DVD, and the other is HD-DVD. That would mean that I can buy an HD-DVD player at my choosing, and not be forced to get a player like I would with BluRay.
With BluRay, the discs can also be more easily damaged because the data layer only has a .1mm layer of protection, so to allow the laser to easily get to the data. Also the discs to which have no such backwards compatibility features, like HD DVD.
So in terms of storage, its easier to damage a bluray disc than it is a HD DVD disc.
Which, in the long run, isn't worth the $25-30 price tag for a frakkin bluray movie, simply because when I buy something, i want it to last. Particularly if I'm dumping $30 bucks on a frakkin movie.

BluRay is technologically superior. It definitely has more potential. I'd quite like to see it adopted, but so far I'm not seeing either format dominating.
I just wish they'd roll out those holographic discs that will outclass both of these formats by orders of magnitude...

Unless you have a TV that shows high-definition, it's a bit pointless.
I'd love to enjoy BSG and the Matrix in HD, but I need two things first. Money is one. A need to go from DVD is another.

True. It's pointless to adopt an HD player when you don't have the proper equipment.

Frankly, until either formats become more popular than DVD, I shall stick to DVD.

Well, the war is over now.... While it might be years until DVD supplanted, it kind of makes sense to go Blu for new purchases when it makes sense (new content or restored older films).

On the upside, Blu-ray players (and HD-DVD) do play regular DVDs, and upconvert via HDMI, so nothing is being tossed. You are right that they are more easily scratched than standard DVDs or HD. Then again, there's lots of stories now about older DVD layer separation, so nothing last forever anyway.

I know how you feel. Just stick with DVD for now, Blu Ray won't last long with HVD coming out soon.

No, the HD DVD and the BluRay are cool and sharper and better quality of Dolby surround, but my entire collection excists out of DVD-roms it would be very expensive to buy the whole frackin' collection on HD DVD or BluRay:eek:!

For everyone. So, you switch your new purchases to Blu, and upgrade where you really want to.

I hear ya, but it's hard to say 'no' to high-def once you see it in your own home....
