Now here's something BlackTigh can probably identify with...if you were waiting to bring this up and I'm preempting you...sorry.
Have you noticed that for every different Colonial soldier, you see a different salute? Now I don't know about other military organizations, but I know that I've been yelled at more times than I can count about tiny little variations I don't even notice...was this just not part of their training?

While they try to enforce their particular flavor of salute in training (and yes, there is a manual and a "standard"), in practice I've seen a lot of variations. Granted, it'll be worse on a tv show, but I saw a hell of a lot of different kinds of salutes at Langley, and I guarantee you that I never saw any generals chewing anybody out over their salute technique. Although, I'll grant, that I really didn't see a whole heck of a lot of saluting going on at ACC, but we were mostly indoors.

hmmm..... well-spotted. Now you mention it, yeah, there's definitely some variation.
My theory is the actors are merely clueless about that sort of thing having, in all likelihood and like most artistses, never actually served.
Having already ruptured a gooley over other perceived military humiliations on this show, I am prepared to overlook the relatively small matter of how well these guys "throw the man a bone".
What's the world coming to?
PS: there are many different official salutes: USN, USAF, US Army, Commonwelth AFs, navies, etc.

maybe here there areŽnt... 12 colonies didnt like each other very well till the first cylon warAlmost all of the CF and CMC personnel were trained AFTER the Cylon war...the few exceptions being people like Bill Adama, Saul Tigh, probably Admiral Corman and Doc Cottle. Even Admiral Cain wasn't around during the first war.

The best salute I saw in the show by a mile was from Boomer - you could have cut glass by the straight edge of her hand. Helo's is sometimes bent, sometimes straight.
Navy 'should' always salute with a straight line from fingertip to elbow. But some navy salutes are pretty crooked!
In my experience the worst salutes come from the most senior officers - they don't need to prove how good they can do it any more. Junior officers are much more aware of the chewing out they get if they do a bad one.
What gets my goat, being former Navy, is incorrect protocol, like two senior officers returning the salute of a junior. Ain't done man. But then it's the RTFF, I know, I know.
Still like nails on a board.

Given his age I'm sure Eddie Olmos served in some branch of the U.S. Armed Forces at one time or another, which is probably why he gets his salutes spot on in the series; with a straight line from fingertip to elbow. Other cast members like Katie Sackoff, Jamie Bamber generally don't get it right, but it's not something to be concerned about. After all, it's a television show.

Well Apollo is just a reservist so I can believe that he'd be kinda sloppy about the little things like that...

I'm surprised at the number of sloppy salutes seen in Razor. Given Admiral Cain's reputation, you'd think Pegasus' crew would make sure to get it right.

Yeah, I can imagine Bill Adama not giving a frak, I mean hey we're just an old battlestar about to be decommissioned and these guys are more like my family anyway, I'm not gonna bust their asses on useless stuff...so they got out of the habit.
But on Helena Cain's ship? If she'll shoot the XO for arguing with her crazy plan, lords help the poor ensign who gets sloppy in front of her.
