View Full Version : Ceiling Fans on a Basestar? WTF?

I just noticed something...the Hybrid's basestar has ceiling fans in the corridors. What the hell is up with that? I freeze-framed it and checked carefully, they're NOT ventilation fans to suck air in our out, they're just ceiling fans to blow it around. What the hell do metal Centurions need ceiling fans for? They just love the feeling of a cool breeze on their...wait, no skin. Well, they just love that windblown look their...wait, no hair either.
Some graphics designed just couldn't figure out what to do with empty ceiling space

Or an example of set reuse?
Or the Cylons thought that it'd help increase the resale value when they phase out that model?

Or maybe it was to cool down the Hybrid :) If it processes a lot o data it needs to be cool down ;)

Or an example of set reuse?I'll check again, but I believe they were CGI fans.
Or maybe it was to cool down the Hybrid :) If it processes a lot o data it needs to be cool down ;)Not even near the hybrid...and a remarkably inefficient method for cooling the hybrid, anyway...they would regulate its temperature by refrigerating the goo, probably.

HAAA! I can just imagine the Cylon Martha Stewart trying to pick out the right color.

Martha Stewart IS a Cylon.

If they were so concerned about temperature control, then they could easily just turn off the ship's heaters... They are in space, after all.
As for the sets, the corridors were clearly redresses of the basestar's sets, particularly the corridors.

In this scene where you can see the shadow of the ventilation fan:

Here's an image capture of two ceiling fans:

perhaps the Cylons put it there so we could discuss it in a forum??? Could this be why Razor is apparently so important for plot development in season 4??

Maybe it's because old Cylons, really look like walking toasters and they have to be cooled down 24/7. It takes a lot of energy to toast a toast :D

Perhaps the old school Cylons think that putting air conditioning on their basestar makes them cooler than the newer Cylon models???

IMO, the fans are there only to give us, the viewers, the impression that this basestar is significantly older than the basestars we're used to seeing.
Or...
If one assumes that Cylons pre-hybrid are 100% mechanical than you could also assume that Cylon basestars would not need a atmospheric circulation system installed.
Once the hybrid was created, the Cylons needed to hastily install a air system in the basestar using readily available materials in order to make their escape from the ice planet.
Now here's another interesting question. Did the old Centurians create the hybrid or were there other, more advanced models that actually did the work like Lucifer?

That's an excellent question...I think the old Cylons could very well have done it, I mean they WERE sentient.

The First Hybrid had a rebellious streak and thought that putting spinners on the basestar would make him look cool... except that he had no hubcaps, so he went to Home Depot and got himself some ceiling fans. Same thing, right? :p

Well maybe they wanna say "We might be old, but our basestar is so COOL, and so are we" :D

Mechanical cylons may burn fuel. In order to supply fresh oxygen fans are needed to circulate it.
Mechanical cylons may produce corrosive vapours during operation, to remove this corrosive element fans are needed.
Frankly - I can imagine several reasons why a purely mechanical environment might need a ventilation.

Frankly - I can imagine several reasons why a purely mechanical environment might need a ventilation. It all depends on whether they're VENTILATION (move air in and out of a room) or CEILING fans (blow around the air within a room). When I freeze framed it on my TV, they looked like ceiling fans, but that screen capture makes 'em look a little bit more like ventilation fans.

In the flashback we see the young Adama is trying to help the guinea pig humans. We also know from Razor that humans where taken from a raptor. We know that mechanical Cylons don't need air, so the only alternative (expect for a mistake of the producers) is: the fans helped circulate air, for the captive humans and the hybrid.

The point I was making was that ceiling fans don't circulate air, they just blow it around within a room. Of course if they're ventilation fans it makes more sense.

The reason for the fans ;
Cylons like the human enviroments and they like to create place and decoreations which similar to humans.

Not Seriously: What has more creep factor than dimly lit, hot, sweaty places with slow turning fans?
Hollow sound of footsteps on metal floors, hearing voices of someone high on a joint speaking in their heads.
Take one step more and you have a scene from ALIENS or EVENT HORIZON.
Seriously: Fans are there to cool humans. They were there on the basestars when they built them to transport shitloads of cylons to do battle with the 12 colonies.
So when the Cylons rebelled they did not bother to remove the fans, unless they were SO anal and still added fans to new basestars they built after the rebellion began.

I think the last 2 posters have hit the nail on the head, beating me to the logical conclusion. The BSG art department felt that spinning shadowy fans increased the creepy atmospheric tension. Coupled with the fact that the cylon yearn to be more human and humans love ceiling fans (and ventilation) the placement of the fans in the basestar makes complete sense.
So says just me.

maybe the cylons thought that the fans were really pretty and kept them for their aesthetic qualities?? Or perhaps they needed fans to clear the smoke up from all that burnt bread!!

I would just assume that yes, this basestar is important...maybe a lot of research on humans was done there and they needed air. Then again why would research rats be allowed to walk around? Couldn't they just install an air tank in the lab?
To expound on that, why would there be air at all in a basestar? Wouldn't it be a pretty good defense against human invaders, not to have an atmosphere for them?
In a lot of old buildings, you see large, exposed fans circulating air, as opposed to just ventilation ducts. It's probably just an attempt to make the ship look dated, a mistake in logic.

I think that the ceiling fans are there for two reasons.
1. The circulate air for the Hybrid, who is a biological creature and will need an oxyginated enviroment in order to survive.
2. In case they got their hands on some humans to experiment on, as we saw in Razor all of the experiments were conducted on living humans. Oxygen is important in keeping people alive you know. ~D
