View Full Version : Sniffing Colonials

Has anyone noticed the amount of sniffing going on in this show? It seems to be some kind of acting trick or technique.

Starbuck is (was) the main offender, requiring a man-sized SNIIIIIFFF just before she says anything emphatic or presents some form of melodrama.

eg:

"Hey Starbuck, who's the best pilot?"

*SNNNIIIIIIFFFFFF*

"You know HotDog, why don't you frakkin' $*(&$^* &$&(&$ ...!"

So what's with the sniffing? REALLY irritating. Watch Starbuck, you'll see what I mean but others also do it. Laura Roslyn does it now and then. One time, behind her desk in Colonial One, she hawked back with such force before she said her line, I thought she was going to swallow an oyster or hoik it up on her desk!!

Anyone else cheesed off with the SNIFFING???

Meh, they're filming in Canada, they probably have runny noses :D

I guess I never really pay attention to that stuff, I'll have to look again...were they doing it in Razor?

*SNIIFFF* Dunno. I haven't watched Razor yet as I'm living out here in the 14th Century.

But I'd hazard a guess and say, Yes, as it seems to be the latest acting trick to enhance one's performance and on-screen "presence".

Can't really say I've noticed it. Then again I guess I'm not looking for whether or not an actor is sniffing before a line. I tend to be hooked on the action and storyline.

I think it all comes down to this, really... people expect actors to act in a certain way, and when that way is challenged, they don't feel it is realistic at all.

Frankly, I hadn't noticed when people sniff or not. Typically, accomplished speakers will take a deep breath before speaking when they know they're about to tackle a complicated statement. It's a natural reaction, in my experience anyway.

For instance, I typically clear my throat to make sure my voice is at the right pitch when I begin on an important point, which gets people's attention.

Given that they're filming in Canada, where it's likely colder, and on a sound stage that's less than pleasant, I'd say that Sackhoff's sniffing is part-character, but more due to her nose getting moist (as does mine) in reaction to colder, dry air as she breathes.

Can't really say I've noticed it.

Hocus, pocus..... you will now ALL notice the sniffing, particularly by Starbuck - and be supremely peeved off by it.

Thank me later, guys......:p

I've noticed it with Kara, but I must catch the moment where Roslin "is going to swallow an oyster or hoik it up on her desk" :D

Damnit.

Seriously though, I don't think they were doing it in Razor...

Well, Aylinn, I'd point out the season and episode but danged if I can remember.

I'd say it's sometime early in Season 3. In her ship, she's sitting behind her desk big-noting herself.

Adama (or was it Lee) asks her something and she thinks for a moment, then "...SNNNIIIIIIIIIFFFFFFFF... well, Adama, it's like this....."

Funny thing is, even she looks taken aback.

I think the director must've said, "Hey *****, try snorting or sniffing like Starbuck does, just before you say something. It makes it look a little more dramatic!"

Well if you have it on DVD, try to find it again, I'm quite curious to know.

Too much Coke?

On a similar note, some girl in work has apparently been constipated for five weeks. What's your favourite cure?

Dammit, where do you find these old threads? Coke can be a problem, and Starbuck is a bit of a high strung character, however Katie McSackovich doesn't really have the sheer barebones skinniness of a coke addict. I think that sniffing is a good way to emphasize a point. I sniff because I'm sick all the time, but nothing means business like a mean *sniiiiiiiiiiiiiiffffffaohhshitpalooza* before a sentence.

Regarding your coworker - if she doesn't go see a doctor like right now, she will die. No joke. You don't want to see it when it happens. It's like Apocalypse Now with poo.

This (http://www.battlestarforum.com/online.php) shows which threads the spiders are reading. They check out old threads like nobody's business.

I'm told she went to the doc and he gave her eight tablets of something the recommended dose for is three. Didn't work. Personally I couldn't care less but I'm intrigued by a human body that hasn't had a shit for five weeks. That's like holding your breath for seven minutes or something.
