So my desktop (the computer I'm typing this on), will turn 10 sometime next year. Normally I'm a proponent of a ~4 year lifecycle on computers (especially laptops), but this thing just keeps on ticking.

So currently its sitting with a Geforce2, but I've been having some intermittent display issues. I'm looking at upgrading so that I'm only a couple of generations behind (instead of 6). I've been looking at 6800's on eBay, and was hoping to score one for < $50.

Is that a reasonable target and a decent upgrade? I'm not looking to play the latest games (obviously), but I do like to run pretty high resolutions. The only reason I even ask is the auctions I've been watching:

My max bid on this one was $25:

This one ran up to $50:

I'm currently bidding on this one:

I like the Zalman cooler, and the 6800GT would put me about as good on the NVIDIA front as can be expected for less than a benjamin, and is probably pushing the limits as far as being CPU (and motherboard) limited. I'm not sure if my mobo is AGP 2X or 4X.

I say buy it, the 6800 should do quite nicely. I had a GeForce 4, one of the top-end ones (Ti4800, I think), and if you just want to run high resolutions, something like that would have been more than enough, but if the 6800s are that cheap now, by all means go for it.

I finally scored one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260174745559&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016

I kept getting sniped, so I ended up raising my $50 limit by a bit. It looks like they actually are going more in the ~70 range, with "buy it now"s more around $100.

Oh man, I wish I had known about this sooner. Last year when I put together my system I did a lot of research on video cards. According to reviews by Tom's Hardware, the 6600 is actually the better card. Not that the 6800 is a bad one, but for the money it's not that different from the 6600.

I'm thinking about upgrading after the New Year, those crystals in Blade's Edge are killing my frame rate! ;)
