Any other major fans of the series/movie here?

Nope. Worst show ever...
...ah who am I kidding. It's one of my favorite SciFi shows, with fantastic group of characters who are a joy to watch. Combined with witty dialogue, an interesting universe, and great cinematography and music.
The movie is more mainstream-like with increased action and sound in space, but it's still nice to watch. Better than nothing after the show was scrupulously canceled far too soon.

Apparently another movie might be on the way!

I'm not sure I want to watch it without Wash...
Damn you, Joss Whedon.

Depending on if the franchise is ever given another swing at life, I'd argue that future installments might somehow surround that enigmatic bastard even without him being present.
Still, I was actually far more irked by Book's death in retrospect than Wash's; while Wash was an incredibly witty, savvy and loveable character, Book had plenty of story that was quite obviously being geared toward telling and Whedon threw him to the dogs, anyway.
Artistic license, sure, but I found it depressing. :(

Well I heard a year or two ago that Whedon has plans for a comic book series to tell Book's story, so I'm not terribly worried (although I'll likely never read it, as I get a lot of DVDs but not a lot of comic books). Wash, on the other hand, was just thrown away like yesterday's garbage :(

I am still quite irked at my friends who made me watch the DVD's of this series. I was quite content in my ignorance of it's goodness. Now, I can't believe the waste.

Good points, JDS. I've never been much of a comics person, myself; it's just something about illustration representing continuation of television production... wow, if I ended that sentence with any more words of that ilk, I'd have scared myself.
But I'll definitely check out a summary, at least, should that occur. I just wish he'd take another swing at it via Sci-Fi or something...

I got on the Firefly bandwagon very late. My friends talked about it for ages and then bought the series for a great price one day. Best Buy had a special on it for $20. I, as the group skeptic and the sarcastic one, scoffed at them.
"20 bucks! What a waste! Save up for an iPod. Or get something useful like a computer or video game. Maybe buy some anime or finally buy the Holy Trilogy."
A few weeks after that I looked up the series on Wikipedia and talked with my co-workers. Unbeknownst to me they are fans of the show. If female librarians in their 30s, 40s, and 50s like the series then I may as well see the fuss. At least, that's what I thought.
I grabbed it from work and spent a week glued to it. I didn't get to see the last episode until 2 weeks later, stupid people requesting movies that make me return DVDs. By that time Serenity was sitting next to my TV.
I finished the series and watched Serenity twice. I amazed myself by how much I became invested in the series.
Whedon did a great job on the show. From the beginning its Western roots showed in every aspect of the show. The missions, the character archetypes, and the story. I love the Holy Trilogy as much as the next guy. But, Mal gives Solo a run for his money.
I hated that Inara didn't come into the film as much as she did in the show. I also hated that "Preacher" and Wash died. Wash's death echoed more with me than Book's. But, I have a strong desire to find out more about Book's past.
The series did a great job of alluding to his past. One episode in particular, naturally I forget its name, where Serenity is boarded by the Alliance and Book's ID gets them out of it is particularly intriguing. He clearly has been high enough in the Alliance to send them scurrying.
I wish Whedon spent more time exploring that on screen for all of us to experience. If there ever was a spin off I could see it revolving around Book and his past.
As an aside, for any of you sci-fi fans that love early works what did the first episode remind you of? At least the very beginning when the war was shown.
For me, I instantly thought of Starship Troopers. Veerhoven's depiction coupled with Heinlein's written word flooded my mind for those initial scenes. I wonder if Whedon was influenced by Heinlein when he did that scene.
As an aside, I've heard that Firefly will be come back to the screen. The rights are being moved out of Fox's possession. Whedon said he'd never work with Fox again, despite their success in marketing and producing his other works, but he did say he'd resurrect Firefly with another company. No details but this is more than a rumor in the wind.
I don't like Firefly as much as say B5 but it is one of the better sf series out there. I'm crossing my fingers for its resurrection.
