Well, this is somewhat of a surprise...

Woo-hoo!
A pilot would make sense as the show would not be a budget breaker, and RDM would find himself in a better position with a base eager to enjoy a new BSG-themed show. Sci Fi would lose little in a pilot, and gain much if it gained good ratings and make new money.

Agreed. Even if it were a TV movie or direct-to-DVD release, it would be better than nothing.

SciFi have taken bigger risks before in pilots and original movies. Caprica seems a pretty safe bet in comparison. Perhaps Scifi have listened to the fallout on the net about the splitting of Season 4 rumors and thought instead that they will commission Caprica as a series and keep the viewers that way.

Logical, Mr. Spock. Perfectly logical.
But then, this is the Sci Fi Channel we're dealing with here. Home of ECW Wrestling. I rest my case. (Be ever so glad, Mercifull, that you deal only with Sky and BBC.)

Worse-case scenario: The pilot is aired and sold as a DVD (http://www.syfyportal.com/news424170.html#), recouping some costs. If the pilot is strong, then the network has a new series.Seems like what happened with The Amazing Screw-On Head (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazing_Screw-On_Head)...
