Perhaps the only thing I didn't like about this episode was that Adama appeared to be quite mortally wounded yet survived.
At the end of season one, I remember thinking that surely Adama can't survive such an injury, yet he has to in order for the show to continue. It reminds me a little of Baltar surviving the blast in the miniseries i.e. it was a little overdone. Also the absence of Cottle added to the improbability of his survivial. I know the counter argument is that sometimes people survive against the most improbable odds but nevertheless it raised some doubt for me.
But in saying that, it is a minor criticism of an excellent episode

Intense. Just frakking intense. That scene between Boomer and Tigh; "just get it over with, you frakking coward." Christ, that blow to the wounded cheek must've hurt. Poor Tigh. You gotta feel sorry for being thrust into command like that.
It's interesting watching how the Watchtower Cylons behave, but not amazingly revelatory. Same with Gaeta frakking up the fleet's coordinates. He just happened to be the one on duty. At least he can get himself out of it.
It's on a roll this show. This end of Season One, start of Season Two arc is the real hook, I think.
What was that moment when Tigh's about to shoot Boomer and he imagines a really abstract image of a door being opened? Empathy?
Love the way Tigh says, "Is that software firewall ready?" - like he hasn't a clue what the frak that means.
Hmmm. Adama dies in this episode, for a moment, doesn't he?
Wicked space battle.
Interesting, too, how the prison guard's prayers seem to have a bearing on events, as Baltar's do when he's in the doo-dah.
I do miss that right eye. A greater loss than many absent friends (i.e. Cally).
Ah... The opening door - Adama calling Tigh back to the fleet. Why was that moment intercut with Tigh almost shooting Boomer?
Ace.

Well there was a deleted scene where Adama, when they first met, prevented Tigh from murdering a man in a bar. Maybe he was thinking of killing Boomer but went "What would Adama do?" sort of mindset.
A agree Genji that this was a great episode and I really enjoy the Kobol arc. I like the music in the battle. Its somber and slow. Nothing like in traiditional scifi.
The whole episode (and the next) I still find myself holding my breath for Adama.
Really cool episode and a great season starter. One of the episodes I rewatch most frequently.

Very good episode. It starts right where it should start; total panic. I love the way Lee screams "Colonel, that's my father!!!" as they rush him off to the brig.
Something feels a bit off with the picture quality, I'm not sure I can explain what it is though. Too bright and sharp perhaps?
My theory about the flashing door is that Tigh keeps being reminded how Adama "saved him" back in the days and he owes him. Could symbolize rage over Boomer (pretty obvious, but memories of your best friend would fortify this).
Another great thing about this episode and the coming ones where Tigh is in command is how they zoom in on his face and he clearly has no idea how to handle the situation.

Neakal is right on the money. Those scenes of old memories really add a lot of depth to the character of Saul Tigh. The old memories would make an interesting jumping off point for, dare I say it? - a TV movie, or twelve.

I think the couple of scenes we have of Tigh with hair looking like a Jim Henson reject are quite enough, thanks.

Very good episode, I agree that the end of S1/start of S2 is really the highpoint for this show.
I loved how the single baseship was really menacing in this episode - partially due tot he lack of many operational Vipers and pilots, Galactica can only delay a defeat by fighting and has to jump to avoid it. Since the virus, and the Centurions (both came aboard in this episode), almost nailed Galactica in the end, this was the closest the Cylons ever came to destroying Galactica (outside New Caprica, perhaps, they really should have finished it there). Visual were stunning, too.
Boomer wanted to die in this episode - and with good reason. Not only is her life over now, she realises that she the colonials will have answers and she doesn't have any answers. The likelyhood of the colonials believing that is extremely low, so it seems Boomer was looking forward to getting a treatment like Leoben got from Kara (only without the strength and mindgames of Leoben), or worse. I still think that Cally, unintentionally, did her a favour by shooting her. She could have ended up much like Gina did, otherwise, even if Adama would probably not have gone as far as Cain did. Living in a cage, despised and hated by everyone including her "friends" and being experimented upon, probably being beaten to give up information that she doesn't have.
Tigh actually performed quite competently here, as commander of Galactica. In battle, he is a good enough officer. Not giving in to Boomer's provocation was also smart thinking from him (potential info could be worth gold) . As long as he doesn't have to deal with civilians, Tigh is OK.
