I love this 2-parter, admittedly the second part is better, but you can hardly penalise the first part for that, since its whole point is to set up for the second part.
Probably my favourite 2 episodes.
(plus, is it just me, or does "Kobols last gleaming" sound like a seriously cool name to you? i dunno, i love it!)

A storming episode, poignant, touching and ties the mythos of TOS into the new series. the interplay between Adama and Apollo is first class.
I remember being soooo excited prior to seeing this episode for the first time. The word 'Kobol' does that to me. i really need to get out more often.
oh, and 'Kobols Last Gleaming' is a seriously cool name for an episode, I totally concur with Sgt Teta on that one. it would be a great name for a band... now where's my Stylophone again...

with televisual bootleggers streaming
the show that I love,
I am with those above,
in voting for 'Kobol's last gleaming'.

In the beginning when Starbuck is sleeping with Baltar, they clearly want us to believe it's Lee, so to reinforce that I'm pretty sure they actually used Jamie Bamber in that scene (never showing the face of course) but switching to James Callis in the end of the scene.
Did anyone else notce this?

Haven't re-watched yet but I remember thinking it wasn't Baltar's hair.

That opening montage of Part 1 is great, the score, the intercutting between scenes.... after the opening scene of Occupation, my favourite opening to a BSG episode ever.
And hell yes I noticed it (Lee/Baltar) The first time I watched it it was like "YES!... finally... Kara and Lee... woop!...........hang on... NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Yeah. It broke my heart seeing Boomer so desperate.

Excellent episode. BSG at its best. The beginning of some great episodes which stretch into the early part of season 2. They manage to deal with the 3 stories i.e. on Caprica, Kobol and Galactica very well and none are short-changed.

lol :D
I remember saying the first time I saw the miniseries, without knowing anything about the show. "Those two are gonna hook up somehow, I just know it..." My fiancé tried denying it to the very last but nigh.

The Official Companion confirms your reading of the scene - both Jamie Bamber and James Callis took part in it.
Holy frak. This episode was the greatest thing I'd ever seen ever when I first watched it.
If ANY girl deserves to be the Final Cylon - the key that unlocks the door, the one who has a purpose that will give her life meaning - then it's Boomer.
Roslin's frakked up belief that the scriptures are not a crock, and the argument with Adamadamabout the Arrow of Apollo... this is where I got hooked after already getting hooked. When Baltar's Raptor gets winged I loved the Life of Brian reference. Exciting "watch the hill!"... "thanks a lot, Chief!" stuff. This episode surpasses anything that's gone before. Kara/Lee shipper scenes are aceness. My boss manipulating Kara to her will... evil Darth Roslin. I think this episode is where my hatred of the arch manipulator began. I still liked Kara in this episode a lot.
It's all pith and circumstance, though. The tragedy of Boomer is the point of the whole story.
However, I LOVE the elven music when Starbuck jumps.
Top top episode. After the oft averageness and direness of Season One, which surely is as weak as any Season following, this episode and the one that follows truly defined BSG - the mythological impetus, the human conflict, the theorising and fanwanking were all founded here. In this episode the actors - every last one of them: Helo, Caprica Sharon, Boomer, Kara, Lee, Adama, Tigh, Roslin, Baltar, Head Six, all of them - truly nailed their characters. The religious aspect is defined here and at last, thank the gods, the show finally found its way and went beyond Firefly. Serenity, this is not. It is more and beyond, the best of Season One so far, and it rescues Season One from a dithering "are we sci fi or not?" dilemma. We're not. And thank god.

So, with that Basestar hanging in space above Kobol, and the fact that after Boomer destroyed it the Cylons didn't send the fleet in to wipe out the humans, how long had the Cylons been aware of and exploring Kobol before the humans showed up, and was the Basestar just a look-out?

As you know, I suspect they have been aware of it for quite some time. Athena seems to know a lot about it (and Boomer seemed to recognise it immediatelly, too).

After we all see the series finale, it will be interesting to see which episodes of season 1 we re-watch. I think the openning scene of the miniseries sets the stage for the way in which the cylons will manipulate for their malicious or benevolent plan. They are willing to sacrifice themselves. The cylons probably intended for the base star to be blown to bits.

Something I thought the co-ordinated re-watch might do is prep us for this reinterpretation of the beginning of the show so that when the revelations come, what they refer to is relatively fresh in the mind. Many of might still miss details that others would pick up on though, which is why the 'co-ordinated' bit is important.

A BSG classic, personal favorite, and a momentous climax to season one. I was hooked.
Rich in everything I love about BSG. I cannot say how many times I have listened to Passacaglia and Kobol's Last Gleaming.
I say this two parter, and the opening episodes of Season 2 will be high on the rewatch list once the finale comes around (but that's because I think they'll return to Kobol).

That sounds difficult to do. Probably will me much easier to try it again after we all see that last episode of the series.
