Interesting one here.

My mum + Girlfriend both refuse to watch galactica thinking it'll be all lasers, forcefields and treknobabble, anyone got any recomendations for a first episode to watch which shows them BSG is so much more than that?

I'm thinking soaring poetry, love, death, revenge, honour, friendship, everything that makes BSG what it is.

I have series 1-3, Razor + miniseries

Oh, and they wont watch 2 and a bit hours of mini-series to start, just so ya know!

Cheers guys + Gals, Sgt Teta.

Don't bother then. It's their loss.

Just stop watching everything else. If they're watching something on TV, tell 'em you're going upstairs to watch some Battlestar, and refuse to ever watch anything they want to watch again.

Easy.

Act of Contrition? Early on, so they won't be too confused. Simple plot, that has few confusing cylon bits and pieces of information. Everyone (especially girls) love Kara, right? She's being both kick-ass and tormented in this episode, and there's the Zak storyline if they are a fan of romance in their TV. Gives a good impression of the relationships between Lee-Bill Adama-Kara and Lee-Bill Adama-Roslin, and ends on a cliffhanger, so they are immediately encouraged to watch the next episode.

I watched season 1 before watching the miniseries, and found '33' really confusing (though in retrospect its an awesome episode), and 'Water' ever so slightly below par. 'Act of Contrition' was where I first got hooked. Though admittedly that's due in large part to Kara rather than anything else.....

Anyway, good luck in getting them to watch it. There are loads of us on here that prove that girls can appreciate BSG just as much as guys can :)

Maybe doing some serious "don't be so close minded" discussions? I had it with my family and now they all love it. Except my brother, he lives in a box.

Ps. Act of Contrition sounds like an excellent choice, I agree.

act of contrition, absolutely ...

if they want "women playing strong roles" then by definition pegasus, res. ship i & ii, and razor would have to be up there, right?

crossroads -- since it's a bit laura heavy?

/too many choices really ...

I'm trying the whole "close minded" thing. I think i've finally convinced my girlfriend at least how immense the show is, and that it deserves its chance at the least.

I've got my girlfriend to agree to watch an episode, so AoC sounds like a good choice.
I was thinking Ressurection Ship 1+2 (sinces thats the episode i just watch in my re-watching string), but without seeing the ones before i dont think it'd have the same effect. The whole "woop another battlestar, thank god... but oh-no she's gonna take over the fleet", i think lots of the undercurrent subtleties be lost on a newcomer.

i had the same problem with my girlfriend and I used 'Flesh and Bone' as a starting point for her. This worked a treat and she has subsequently got her mum and sister into BSG by showing them the same episode. They are all a bit strange though, so what do i know??

I would personally wait with Pegasus episodes until the person really cares about the series, since i remember how I felt first time I watched the episode and then I had no clue that there was another Battlestar out there.

How about Final Cut? Jamie Bamber in a towel should convince them.

But seriously, I think that Pegasus, followed by Resurrection Ship I + II might be a good choice. While part of the impact of another battlestar showing up might be lost on a newcomer, I also think those three episodes make up a nice little story-arc in itself.
And although it might be a bit problematic to start the show with season 3, I also think that Exodus I + II might be a good starting point because to me, they are two of the best BSG episodes, even though someone new to BSG might need a few introductory words.

Sorry - but to chime in again: Miniseries or nothing. If they can't hack a couple of hours of OMG then they're never going to get BSG. If they can't concentrate for more than half an Eastenders hour then really, dude, reassess the kind of woman you want in your life. Sorry, but there it is.

i got my mom and sister into watching bsg by making them watch the miniseries, followed by kobols last gleaming 1 & 2. The cliff hanger at the end hooked them :)

That might be worth a try, if not dont stress it, personally i got tired of trying to get some of my friends into battlestar. Their loss.

To be honest, I think BSG has such a complex story, watching the miniseries is the way to go. Really hard to jump into the middle. Every episode has some shocking development that would be ruined by watching it out of order. Especially the Pegasus story. It's like reading a suspense novel backwards.

Anyway, I'm living proof file sharing can actually help media sales. My trick for getting my mom hooked on the show... It was pretty hard to get her to watch too because she just "couldn't get the story" as she put it. So I downloaded the miniseries on my computer and used the Media Player streaming function on my Xbox360 so we could watch on the big TV. She seemed to really enjoy the beginning of the story, then 2 days later she brings home the season 1 DVD set and now she just can't stop watching it. Almost finished watching all the seasons 1-3 with her now. And we got Razor too.

Yeah, I am with Genji. The girlfriend probably has to go, get yourself a widescreen TV, and put your mum in a home.

Teta is tit in spanish. Sargeant Tit. Nice ring.
