Hell, might as well make this a poll.

This is always a fun one to bring up and speculate about on a new board.

Following the release of the TOS Epic Series on DVD, all kinds of new things emerged that many of us never saw on non-remastered broadcasts. One of which was the startling presence of what appears to be gold colored Cylon Raiders in the various attacking squadrons throughout the series.

Many have speculated it was an unintentional coloring error during the compositing process. Others (such as myself) believe that it could have been a bit more deliberate, knowing that gold Cylon Commanders (like Vulpa) exist, why not lead gold Raiders? Here are a few screen caps that have made the rounds:

It could be either. Although I do think it might be an over-saturation error.

Or it could be the folks behind the DVDs having jolly fun.

Here's another one that Aphrodite found in the F* Off "Caprica Lights" discussion:

She's an obsessive TOSser. What do you expect? She knows her stuff.

Way to bump it though. Kudos. :)

There are a few others, but I would have to ask a bigger expert than I exactly which episodes the gold raiders appear in.

Did they use the same set of lights for Gamoray as they did for Caprica?

^^^ LOL! VERY good question.

After doing some research, apparently they DID use the lights, but removed the offending remark. You will notice the big off-color black spot in the lights where it used to be right next to the shuttle.

Learn something new every day, I guess. I sure did...

I do remember seeing the gold raider in "Conquest of the Earth" (the cobbled together Galactica:80 movie) on VHS when first released, cos I remember thinking it must have been a new effects shot, though at the time I thought it was orange.

However, since having TOS on DVD I have noticed it there. But, as with everyone else, I don't know if it was always supposed to be there, or a compositing error. More noticable to me at the time of G:80 however was the clearly visible mounting rods on the effects models of the Raiders during the attack on LA simulation (guess the reason the attacks happened at night in TOS!).

Did they use the same set of lights for Gamoray as they did for Caprica?

I think its a slightly dimmed and inverted version of the Caprica Lights.

For comparison (Color coded):

Compare and contrast?

AH! That's it - good call. Didn't even see that. They probably reversed it for the same reason that I thought they may have blacked it out - to make the "F*** Off" line harder to catch quickly.

I think it's the lighting. They've probably got a sort of spotlight on the other raiders but this one raider is kind of in the "slightly lit" area. Jeez..I don't even know the "technical" words for it! :p But if you have a go, in a dark room with a table lamp and focus that on something, you will notice the items in the outer radius if the main focus/item (which would be perfectly lit), slightly dimmer and maybe orangey due to the lighting, hence making it look "gold" or brownish..

Errmm..does that make sense to anyone?? Lol..I tried to explain as best i could..hope it didn't complicate it more!! Lol..

But yes, if it was a Gold raider then..BLING! Lol..

^^^ I know exactly the phenomenon that you're talking about. Sometimes there's also a blue tint on the opposite side of the picture in question. I think this is due to a prismatic effect of the lens that is projecting the light source - not quite perfectly in sharp focus.
