View Full Version : The Last Supper Mind Games

Thought this would be fun for us all. I took the liberty of comparing the original "The Last Supper" painting with the BSG version. In particular, I matched up the disciple with the BSG character to see if there are any similarities and what happened to that disciple. It may or may not foreshadow what happens to our BSG characters. I am starting from left to right.
1. Bartholomew (Laura Roslin)-he was flayed (whipped) and then crucified. Could the flaying symbolize Laura's cancer, while the crucifying means that she won't die from the cancer but through some other more violent means?
2. James the Lesser (Natalie)-death unknown (pretty convienent for the BSG writers if they are indeed doing this).
3. Andrew (Saul Tigh)-crucified.
4. Judas (unknown 5th cylon)-committed suicide. Since I believe that the final cylon is female, it wouldn't surprise me if she was the original "Athena" who committed suicide on Kobol.
5. Peter (Lee)-crucified.
6. John (Baltar)-"The disciple whom Jesus loved the most" John lived and eventually wrote "Revelations". Could it be that Baltar survives and (gag) writes a book at the end of the series finale?
7. Jesus (Head Six)-Not even going to try to find comparisons here. My theory is that Head Six represents "love" and that it will resurrect again and again.
8. Thomas (Kara)-Death unknown. Supposed to happen in India. (Oh joy! Kara being paired with a disciple whose manner of death is unknown! What are we supposed to think about that?!)
9. James the Greater (Sam Anders)-beheaded.
10. Philip (Chief Galen Tyrol)-possibly was Bartholomew's brother. Was crucified along with Bartholomew. In the painting, Philip appears as though he is demanding an explaination. Could Galen be demanding and explanation? (Watch out Tory).
11. Matthew (Athena)-the tax collector. Matthew's death is unknown, but he lives long enough to write the gosple of Matthew. Could Sharon, like Baltar, survive the finale and write a memoir for future generations?
12. Jude (Helo)-the patron saint for lost causes. He was killed by an ax.
13. Simon (Adama)-You won't believe this, but there are three versions as to how Simon dies. He was either (1) crucified (2) sawed in half, or (3) died peacefully. Willing to bet that Adama somehow manages to do all three before the season finale, maybe all at the same time.
What does everyone think? Am I on to something, or am I just bored out of my mind? Let me know.

I have to say I like the # 12. pairing... Jude/Helo, patron saint for lost causes...

#5 kendra shaw? i think so. and adama could be a series of metaphorical deaths, his job, his relationship with lee/roslin/kara, and all followed by his actual death. very nice. i like this.

There are also the interesting notions that several things have changed about the picture since it was initially posted on SciFi.com. Some that stand out most is that HeadSix seems to be moving slowly to the right, away from Baltar and closer to Kara. Also, the little flaming goblet that Roslin lit now appears to be gone. The glasses of water appear to be filling up recently.

So say we all.
Anyhoots, the gospels, (including Matthew) were composed and compiled much later than the apostolic period and are attributed to a number of different writers, (for example, the writing styles change from paragraph to paragraph within single gospels), were then translated and re-translated, (not from the original Greek, but from the later Latin texts). Not to mention the gospels left out of the bible for the sake of convenience, (Thomas, Magdalene etc).
The picture is purely for marketing, to keep people talking about the show, and it's been done brilliantly; when it came out, I loved how excited people were by the tiny details but did kinda see it for what it was and almost disregard it now.:)

Sorry guys. I figured we were all bored waiting for BSG to come back on and thought in bring in the picture to help us think "outside the box" and not always focused on the same question "who is the final cylon" I don't think there has been this much speculation on a TV series question since the favorite "Who shot JR" from Dallas (for the younger generation, "Who shot Mr. Burns" from the Simpsons).
Everyone relax. Have fun with the picture! If any of you are graphic computer geniuses, post the picture yourself with some changes of your own making. Heck, put different heads or clothes on the characters! While you are at it, put alot of liqour on the table because all those characters could use a drink (with the exception of Saul, who may have already had more than his fair share of alcohol).
I know this is a serious forum and I certainly don't want to insult anyone who takes BSG seriously. But SCI-FI is making us wait seven long months before we see what happens next, so why not have some fun with these theories and we may come up with some insight that will bring us closer to the truth about the ending. After all, after this season, we can never come back and speculate about BSG because BSG will be over:(. So let's all throw out every single idea we have ever had about the show, even if we know it is too off-the-wall to be credible. At least it will give us all something to do and may help us stumble on to surprising twists in the plot that we wouldn't come across anyway.
Anyone want to take the Last Supper Picture and mess with it? GO FOR IT! SO SAY WE ALL!!!!!! (The same goes for everything even remotely related to BSG).

Being an EX-Catholic, I was always under the impression that that the matthew and john who 'wrote' their gospels weren't the disciples who followed jesus, but two like named people who followed years later, oh how I love R.C. and it's propaganda. smashing research though!!

Considering how much academic effort goes into analysing which of Shakespeare's plays he wrote, or wrote alone, or even if the Shakespeare from Stratford-upon-Avon wrote any of them, the Bible gets away with astonishingly blind ignorant acceptance of who wrote what, reader-for-reader.

A Big fat Zero of Rick Waller proportions..
I was going to walk if he got in, I handed my notice in and everything, specifying that it was because of this shameless bureaucracy that I could no longer be associated with OU. It worked.
You would think that after '800 years of educating leaders' (shameless OU marketing) they would be wise to my constant guerilla tactics. They are totally clueless. i am so happy that my real identity remains a secret, Batman's got nothing on me. they have no idea how to contain a Northerner whatsoever, I should run as the next prime minister , as stated above, 800 years of educating leaders....

Hmmm... without particularly wanting to kiss your arse, is it at all possible that, given the outrageous market economy that Oxbridge now finds itself in, and the very real sense of utter incompetence both must feel in this world (it must be very very hard for both universities the find the balance between survival and tradition), OU has some illusory concept that one such as yourself can bridge that unbridgeable chasm? Maybe you hit the survival nerve.
That would be ace, and only a century or two too late.

damn right, if you have ever been to Oxford ( i seem to remember that you have) everybody is soooooooo prozaic here, I feel that I am living in the land of the dead or whatever.
A good kick up the behind is definitely in order. Don't get me wrong, I love my job so much, but business sense?? Totally clueless. Costs £33k to get on the programme I administer, and the candidates LOVE it!!!
£1.5 Billion, we have just raised for 'research'. more like the ludicrously brilliant pensions that OU offer.

Yes, but we came down in the summer recess only to obsess over JRRT (of which there's precious f**king little and OU should've got in on the act when the movie was still hot). Living in the land of the dead is my whole point. They cling to 800 years of tradition when this government (and the next) is only interested in league tables. Dangerous ground for the sinecured. Within a few years a second from Oxford will be worth as much as a 2:1 from Keele.
Yes I heard the 1.5 billion thing on R4. The reason you state did cross my mind at the time.
Unfortunately for both of us, I can attest that people like you will reach that age.
And still be poor.

This (http://www.scifi.com/battlestar) publication of the picture has been changing since it was first put up there, e.g. Head Six has been inching away from Baltar little by little.
I compared the last supper picture at EW Website (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/1,,20169703,00.html), which is the original, with the one at BSG website (http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/) at Scifi. Each photo, I compared the position of Head Six's right hand with position of Baltar's left hand and compared the position of Head Six's left hand with the position of Ander's right hand, which is around Starbuck. Head Six's right hand is the same position compared to Baltar's left hand and Head Six's left hand is the position compared to Ander's right hand. With this evidence, Head Six is not moving and is not inching away from Baltar.
However, the flame in front of Laura Roslin has disappeared. This is very obvious.
The only thing that I take in consideration with the last supper picture is what RDM said about the last supper picture in the EW article and said to the watcher from the Chicago Tribune. Everything else about the Last Supper picture is speculation and I do not pay any attention to.

there is a problem with that thinking. Why is there a flame still in from of Roslin then in the EW picture> If EW mirrored SciFi picture, the flame would have disappeared in the EW picture. Also, I believe that EW online got that picture from what was going to published in EW magazine and what is on their servers not what is on SciFi servers. That is why I believe that picture is from Jan.

I don't know. Maybe EW is one or two changes behind sci-fi.com. The Flame only disappeared in the last modification I think.
If I'm wrong I'm quite happy to admit it, but I think Head Six inching towards the right is generally accepted as the biggest ongoing change in sci-fi.com's representation of the picture.
At the end of the day, I think this is sci-fi's spin to generate interest, not RDM's. As Joe (constantly, repeatedly, tiresomely) says, the pic is pretty much felgercarb. It's just meant to generate internet comment, however much they manage to crowbar it into the final analysis at the end.

I did not say anything about who created the picture or whose spin it was. I agree that it was not RDM's spin. I mentioned RDM because what he said about the last cylon not being in the picture. Creating a Last Supper picture is not original. I am getting a little tired of Networks meddling with show. If you listened to RDM podcasts, you know why I am going to say this. I believe that if it was not for Scifi network meddling and wanting more stand alone episodes, I think that BSG would have been a lot better in season 3 and maybe in season 2.5.

Hey Jason, sorry if I came across as accusing you personally of making this bigger than it is. I realise you were just just passing comment. I didn't mean to imply that you thought this picture was RDM's gospel truth. I was just pointing out that I think it's a scifi.com promotion, not an RDM promotion.
The network meddling with the show is a fact of life I suppose. Apart from 'strongly suggesting' they have more single episode story arcs, though, I don't think BSG has done so bad. I take your point though.

I agree that that BSG still a pretty good show. The best on television, I think. However, I think BSG would even be better, without SciFi channels meddling. I not that niave not to realize why SciFi channel wants stand alone episodes and realize that networks will always meddle with shows as long as ratings is a big part of how networks make money. I think that BSG will help revolutionize Science Fiction for the better.
Anyway, I did not want to get this big discussion about the last supper picture anyway. LOL

After looking at both, it would seem the difference is the ceiling. It is larger in aspect and different in placement, if you look at Six's head compared to the ceiling. This was probably the result of EW turning the orig. pic into the interactive pic?

Yes the ceiling was changed, and possibly as you say in order to make the pic interactive as the lights come on section by section in the interactive version, illuminating the characters' silhouettes.
