Ain't It Cool News is reporting that Jamie Bamber, Aaron Douglas, and Richard Hatch explained at DragonCon that Sci-Fi was going to split Season Four, so that ten episodes began airing in February 2008, and then the final ten episodes wouldn't air until February 2009.
If true, that's unfortunate. I would have though that Sci-Fi would have learned by now that the fans don't like huge hiatuses.
But on the upside, hopefully the writers will use this time to make the best frakking episodes they can. With all this time, hopefully there won't be anymore "Oh crap, the Sagittaron storyline sucks. Quick, redo everything."

I was under the impression that they're already producing the entire season straight through, but airing the episodes as two separate truncated "seasons".
Also, I believe this might be more due to the fact of a possible WGA strike in June, and that they would want filler to deal with the fact that they won't be producing content during the strike.

ANOTHER Writer's Guild strike? Oh for frak's sakes, can they quit it with the striking?

I attended that DragonCon panel. (In fact, I was able to ask the last questions to the panel.) It's unclear if what the panel said was anecdotal or fact. I'd wait to hear more.

In which case, the last season may be split just out of necessity, not greed.

This will destroy me. I wouldn't be able to bear another year's wait! What I really want is twenty episodes straight through, every Sunday at ten (where I'm from). Now that we know this is the last season, there shouldn't be any pressure for the writers to create any filler storylines and just let it play out in the serialised method we all know and love.
I'm expected big things after the amazing premiere that was Season Three, so I know Four won't dissapoint, but even that month between Eye of Jupiter and Rapture was rough.
And besides, the whole season will be done, and their contracts fulfilled, why drag out what little fans they have left?

Mark Verheiden (http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Mark_Verheiden) discussed the issue of the strike on his blog:

Basically, a good portion of the second half of the episodes still have to be written and he expresses some doubts as to whether or not they'll be able to finish producing the season should a November strike come to pass.
So the fact that they're splitting the season gives breathing room to the production, should a strike happen.
Yeah, it sucks that they can't air it all in one shot, but there are circumstances beyond their control going on here.

The thing that worries me here is that the breaks keep getting LONGER and LONGER...if they drop the ball on BSG halfway through the season, they might not get back to it for two years this time...
