View Full Version : Viper pilots dressing down?

I hope I'm not seeing things, but it appears that sometimes Viper pilots let that little metal dog collar they wear open up while they are in flight. I don't have specific episodes in mind right now, but as I rewatch my favorite episodes during the summer vacation, that is one of the little details that jumps out at me. Anybody else notice this? My initial thought is that it must be a wardrobe malfunction (like the time Tigh had Adama's uniform), or perhaps the actors just like to keep them open to stay cool during filming. Maybe they're just not that sturdy, and they pop open from time to time. It just seems like a damn sloppy thing for a Viper jock to do though, letting the integrity of his/her personal flight/vacuum suit be compromised like that. Thoughts anyone?

jamie and katee have both commented how miserable the "cockpit" is to film in, i imagine once they get an acceptable shot they're not prone to re-do it and if it doesn't get see 'til the editing room -- oh well ...
how does rdm say it in podcasts -- "we work and work on the technical stuff, and in the end we'll still get something wrong. and someone will say someting. and we'll roll onward ... "

You mean the chin piece? Yeah, you'll see a shot or two in the mini series where Starbuck's chin piece is extended. I imagine the early "hero" models had some malfunction issues.

Same with the pilot helmets..
First time we see one off .. from Apollo when he first lands on Galactica.. its a more complex helmet.. the lower part opens. etc.
From there on .. helmets are simply put on and thats it.. no lower part opening anymore

Actually not the chin piece, but the metal neck piece that the pilots and ECOs wear to apparently make a seal between the suit and the helmet. I have seen a few scenes where they are open, looking like a large, hinged bracelet.

I wonder whats the tech with that pìece.. the suits dont appear to have a good seal per itselfs.. that piece is the key of the sealing..
another funny instance is in the final shot of the series ..
possible spoiler yet so:
The suits are zero-G vacum suits.. designed to conservate a pilot living in vacum spoace up to 48 or more hours (they calculated Starbuck had 46 hours left and she had been flying some time in the trainings).. and vacum is quite cold.. yes.. you loose energy at low rate because there is no much heat transfer in space vacuum .. but you do loose heat and in 2 days it should be really cold.. so the suits must be a good sealer ..
yet in the final episode we see Anders in earth.. with the flight suit and a jacket over
