...for anyone who's interested. Suggestions for name replacement welcome if I like 'em enough. Ships destroyed or otherwise (up to whatever point the story is at) are named here too, so don't read if you don't want spoilers, I guess.

I don't like the name "Bellerophon". It sounds too much like "bell-end". Plus Bellerophon was a jockey, not a horse. You should call it the Battlestar Genji.

Wow. That's possibly the best name for a battlestar I've ever come across. No, scratch that, the best name for a ship I've ever come across.
Hey, maybe it should have its own ship class!
The Gaystar Genji. It homoeroticises its enemies to death. With an enormous spaceship penis.
Only trying to help. No need to be bitchy about it.

lol, read the message for deletion. I realise that that was probably a bit over the top. Apologies.

No worries, mate. I thought it was well funny.

The name Oberon sounds like it's a big old horny mining ship. If i were in charge, it would have the name Osiris:thumbsup:.

Perhaps a luxury liner called Pagad's fantasy liner?

Oberon stays. That battlestar's name has been changed three times. And it was editing hell. Plus I think it's a cool name, and it comes from a source that does not originate in Greek, Roman or Egyptian gods. Even if admittedly it's not the manliest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberon).
So how well do you guys think that the story and ships fit into the BSG "spirit" of things? That's the most important thing to me at the moment.

hehe:lol:
Perhaps the Beudoinis.. It looks like Penis but that doesn't matter... it would be a great name for a research ship?:p

Oh alright then, if you have to be serious about it: I don't think there's anything wrong with the names and it seems perfectly Battlestarry to me, and I particularly like the way the writing's going at the moment. The amazing insight they have, to realise the humanoids are Cylons, still jars with me, but we've discussed that. I think the writing is improving with each update.

Yes, I am feeling a bit insecure about that. Possibly it will be re-written at some point but there's only so much refining I can do :)
Since I'm surprised no-one pointed it out yet, the Serenity in the ship roster should be fairly familiar. You've seen it before...

I know how much some people on here love Firefly, and it was in the miniseries. That's all the excuse I need :)

The first names I noticed were the Nostromo and the Sulaco. Kudos to a fellow Alien/Aliens fan.
Names that I've always used in games and aborted fan fiction stories (in assorted sci-fi universes) are Orion (usually the most battleworthy/biggest/baddest ship - like Pagad's Bellerophon), Osprey (a lighter, faster - but equally advanced - cruiser type, roughly akin to the Valkyrie), Dauntless and Intrepid (ships of the same class that are older versions of the Orion - not quite as capable, but very formidible - similar to the Oberon, I suppose).
I usually name other ships after my family's surnames (Reed/McCullough/Farrow/Vincent, etc.), friends' last names (Anderson/Brubaker/Oldenburg, etc.), or my favorite classic rock guitarists (Page/Gilmour/May/Perry, etc.).

Sulaco is now a heavy cargo ship, so it can look more like its namesake, the design of which I really like. :)
For those who don't know, in the Aliens movie, the Sulaco looked like this:

I found it interesting that the Sulaco was modeled after the M41 (?) pulse rifle (which rock, by the way).
I can be too much of a geek for my own good. I'll stop typing now.

So I was just messing about with an agricultural (agro) ship design - the three of these in the fleet are larger variants of the botanical cruisers, designed for, well, agriculture in space.

This is what I came up with. Before anyone compliments my amazing artistic skill (lol) I used parts of an actual botanical cruiser.

Don't worry, some bloke is writing a fanfiction based on the battlestar Prometheus which is also the name of a ship in the RTF.

How about a few shout-outs to other legends of sci-fi? Some that come to mind are:
A few from Star Trek -
Kirk
Vulcan (also fits in nicely with BSG's Graeco-Roman orientation)
McCoy
Chekhov
A few from Alien/Aliens -
Ripley
Hicks
Hudson
A few from Starcraft, a PC game)
Reiner
Templar
Zealot (good name for a warship)
Zeratul
Archon
Firebat (good name for a small warship)
I could go on and on, but I think you'll probably find some good names by looking through the cast and character lists of old sci-fi series and movies. Good luck with it!

En Taro Adun! The name "Gantrithor" would sound grand on a Battlestar, wouldn't it?
Seriously speaking, I think adding another Norse name or two would be good. Like "Jormungand" (Giant Snake that encircled the world), or "Yggdrasil" (Giant tree at the center of the world) or "Heimdall" (Guardian of the Gods, who never sleeps and watches and hears everything). There are a whole lot of impressive-sounding Norse names out there.

How about Battlestar Enyo? Enyo is a goddess of war, most frequently depicted as the daughter of Ares.

Battlestar Enya - bores its enemies to death by inviting them to dinner parties and then playing shitty celtic/ambient musical dogshit at them.
Twinned with the Battlestars Dido, Melua and Blunt.

No more battlestars.
Finito. There is Bellerophon and there is Oberon. That is it.
Much to genji's joy, no doubt, I actually wrote some more Bellerophon today. Then deleted it and re-wrote it because it was shit. Ho hum.
Miracles will never cease etc.
