View Full Version : How did the Hybrid jump so quickly?

As soon as the Hybrid is re-activated (S4, Guess What's Coming To Dinner?), she screams "JUMP!" and the basestar jumps, just like that.
Was the FTL already spun up? Was the baseship about to leave anyway?
Basically, we know basestars have to spin-up before jumping. Why is this one different?

Maybe the Cylon FTL technology is so advanced it doesn't need to be "spunned" up. Maybe the Hybrids themselves make the calculations a lot faster than normal computers.

The problem is that Natalie said that their FTL was destroyed beyond repair. Maybe there was some kind of reboot in the Hybrid's system when it was out. Maybe pluging it out was too painful for it that when they plug it in again it was a reaction to pain.

The raptor was still attached?

I think not.
but they have quite some Raptors aboard now...

Nope. Basestars spin up. Gaeta - "They're spinning up!" as the Cylons prepare to leave the Ionian nebula.
If basestars could instantaneously jump they'd be impossible to hit.
CYLON 1: Shit, Pegasus is coming straight for us! It's gonna collide!
CYLON 2: Meh, just jump.

The raptor should have still be connected. How else could they jump to the hub anyway?

I think the raptor is connected. It's still in the hangar but if they have to spin up it would take a little time. Unless the FTL was ready to jump in case of something and when the Hybrid woke up, it knew about it and immediately use it.

I'm casting my vote for 'creative oversight in order to advance the story.'

I think they were already set and ready to jump to the hub.

Natalie states early in the episode "our ship can heal itself" -- one could then argue that by the time they walk into the room to reacitivate the hybrid, their ftl is back to 100%. add to that the cylons, being anxious about the whole mission, already put the [now known to all] coordinates to the hub into the computer [which, on a baseship, IS the hybrid]. sooo, you have 1. a fully functional ftl, 2. pre-loaded coordinates, 3. and, presume again the cylons had already run their various system checks etc. before roslin's raptor landed, so they had a fully "green board"
hence, the hybrid reactivates, decides in a microsecond what she wants to do, triggers all the hardware during the second or so it takes to scream "JUMP!" and the primed spaceraft jumps ...
/is this going to turn into another portals in the launch tubes debate?

But Natalie said that their FTL was destroyed beyond repair, which means that it cannot heal itself.

then I immediately go to my weasel fallback position of -- the cylons kept sharon's raptor fully connected to their central system, with the coordinates loaded and the board green ...

I suspect the Cylon rebels had it spun up in the event of a double-cross, or as part of their plan to attack the hub, which they were nearly ready to do.
Minor plot inconvenience either way. :)

I agree with Joe, I suspect that the cylon rebels had already started the process off knowing that once they had their hostages the hybrid would jump the basestar as soon as she realised she was hooked up to the mains again.

I doubt Baltar will be seen as a hostage. He actually might still have some say in the actions of the centurions.
They still have time to fix it before it airs. =p

I think we should just watch the next episode closely and see what happens.
Having said that, I think that the Colonials would not have left the Cylon Basestar, a hugely important military asset, without a jump drive. Also, if the hybrid was not connected they wouldn't be worrying about it jumping away (to where?), all they'd have to do is guard the raptor.
