I have caught little bits and pieces, but the OS had cylons as snake people? And they never found earth & the series never had a conclusive ending?

Fill me in...

The OS Cylons were created by Reptilian creatures called Cylons. These robots overcame their masters and essentially took their cultural identity; the robots became known as the Cylons.

It is implied that the Cylons overcame their masters some thousand years before the events of the OS with the help of Count Iblis, whose voice was recorded into the Imperious Leader machine.

Also, in the OS, they never did find Earth, but found clues along the way. The first clue is in the Tomb of the Ninth Lord of Kobol, which had the coordinates to Earth, but these were destroyed during a Cylon attack on Kobol. The second definitive clue they found was a drawing Starbuck found Proteus made by "The Silent One" in "The Long Patrol". The third sign was given by the Beings of Light themselves in "War of the Gods, Part II", after they had revived Apollo (who was killed by Iblis). The fourth sign -- depending on how you looked at things -- was the presence of Terra, which in Gemonese meant "Earth", in "Greetings from Earth", "Baltar's Escape" and "Experiment in Terra".

However, John (another Being of Light) tells Apollo that Terra isn't the Earth they're after. So during the last episode, they intercept a radio transmission which they try to decipher. Boomer tries to clean it up, but the cleaned-up version is destroyed during Galactica's attack on a lone Cylon basestar. However, the audience is let in on the fact that the transmission is of the first manned landing of the moon.

So... the series never had a conclusive ending.

TOS ended with them picking up on a transmission from Earth (the lunar lander), but they weren't for sure. They went to find out, and found a basestar at Jupiter. Baltar told them how to quickly destroy the basestar. After they destroyed the Basestar, they went searching for the signals again. After not picking up on the signals from the receiver on top of the battlestar, they left it alone and the fleet was to fly off somewhere (not said where). They ended the show with the receiver picking up the transmission again, but no one was nearby to hear it.

That was 1978 version.

Yeah..that was one of the stupidies things ever.. the cliche of "there was no one to see".. like they have no recorders or alarms.. .

but what is most interesting is... ok.. Galactica AND the fleet may travell faster than the speed of light as we know it.. we will not enter in that.. but the radio signal from lunar lander cant...

than meant 1 light-year per year. and that transmision was created in 1969..
so .. 1-they were really close to earth or 2- they were in the distant future

From what I know, throughout the TOS it was implied that Earth was quite advanced and/or it is set in our Future. Never watched TOS to know but thats the impression I got from summaries and comments.

The planet was never Jupiter, Dzonatas.

The planet was never Jupiter, Dzonatas.

They reported passing a gas giant, and they spotted the basestar over a barren reddish planet (Mars?) They also seemed to describe Uranus.

They didn't call the gas giant Jupiter. I didn't mean to mislead about that.

No worries. :)

Anyway, the attempt by Don Bellisario (the episode's writer) was to get us to think they were near Earth, when obviously that's not the case (seeing as there are future episodes that deal with artifacts from Earth, such as "I Have Seen Earth", that was being prepped for a second season.

Same as in the Re-imagined Series really when they mentioned a red gas giant with rings and everyone was convinced that it is Jupiter. Which of course turned out to be false. :)

And then 1980 came along, with invisible Vipers and flying space-bikes.

Even in the series of books by Richard Hatch, they have not found Earth. These books are set 25 yahrens (years) after the original series.

Is there any word about the eventual fate of the Pegasus in TOS? I'm given to understand it actually survived and disappeared.

It's supposed to. See Battlestar Galactica: Year Two proposal.

In Richard Hatch's books, the Pegasus not only survived the Battle of Gamoray, she returns in the books. I will not say anything about what happens to the Peggy because that would spoil the books.

Let me guess; Apollo somehow ends up as commander and rams a Cylon basestar with it.

Wow. What a great idea. I can see why you're a writer. That would make for such an heroic and necessary denouement. I just hope he'd have the wits to abandon ship before impact.

Apart from nearly copying General Patton's portrayal in the movie "Patton". He behaves almost the same way, loud, doesnt give a shit about anyone, and ballsy.
