Do we know at what point RDM decided who the F5 would be? I'm curious as to when "clues" could start to be seen of who they were? I'm sure there may not be much but I would be curious to see when the writers may have started to move the characters in that direction.

I'm guessing the "fantasic four" were thought of down the line, but I would assume (or hope?) the the 5th was on RDM's mind from the very beginning.

My understanding is that he (or they) have decided the fifth as soon as the end of Season 1, while the (revealed) four were settled some time between the end of Season 2 and the middle of the third.

They basically settled on the "Fantastic Four" in the middle of the third season. There were admissions along the way that the "Final Five" was pulled out of Ron Moore's ass, given the failure of certain arcs and stories to gel together (*cough*Sagittaron arc*cough*).
The "Last Cylon" to be revealed, or "The First", was decided on at the end of the first season.

What is this sagittaron arc you've referred to in a couple places? Does it have to do with Baltar and Gaeta? How do you know about?

I was just rewatching Season Three. I know the writers made the call sometime mid-season, and I know the actors were informed before they did Crossroads, but I'm not sure exactly when. So I was watching - it's hard to tell. Tigh's wigging out, but Tigh's wigging out a lot of the time, and given the circumstances, it doesn't look like a hint to him being a Cylon until he starts hearing the music. Clues turn up with Tyrol when he found the temple on the algae planet. I didn't spot anything as clues for Anders or Foster, other than that they got a bit more screentime than they might have had if they weren't going to wind up being Cylons. There's a conversation between Anders and Starbuck about her "special destiny", but the focus is on her, not him. That's the one with the "sounds like a bad cover band" line, which I love!
I wonder how far back the actors knew, because they did a lovely job of keeping it very subtle.
