This is the translation of the FTL text mentioned in the sister post. "Zeus reaches his hand to the stars " Where and when the text was found is described in that post.

The things addressed by this "translation" are what the term spin up means. What the flash of light during jump is. and why the jump calculations are so important, why it is so likely a ship will jump into a planet or sun instead of empty space in spite of the fact that space is 99.9999999999999999999999% empty space.

The words of Zues ---

Children of Kobol, know the secret of the stars.

Zeus leans low to hear the lament of mortal men. Mortals want the stars. Zeus has willed to give the stars to the thirteenth. Hear mortals the secret of travel over extreme distance.

(translators note: The translation is complicated First, by the change in language and writing over the past four thousand years. Second, by the difference in the terminology Zeus uses to describe technical terms and Finally by change those technical terms have undergone in four thousand years.

(The translator has used the modern technical terminology in the translation as much as possible.)

Empty space is an illusion. What is perceived as distance between two particles of matter-energy is actually the interaction of the spatial characteristics of the particles of matter-energy. This is the same as gravity is really the interaction between the characteristics of the mass of the particles of matter-energy. This is the same as electromagnetic forces are also the interaction of the characteristics of particles.

The characteristics of all particles of matter-energy are spatial, mass, spin and charge. These characteristics can be manipulated. Protons are a component of matter and are found in the nucleus of all atoms. A proton has a specific mass. A proton is made of three quarks. Each type of quark has a specific mass. Intuition suggests that the mass any proton is the sum of the masses of its three constituent quarks. But this is not the case. When the three quarks join together to make a proton, their mass changes. It changes according to law of physics which can be understood by the children of Kobol.

It is a similar characteristic of matter-energy which the children of Kobol will learn to manipulate. That is the spatial characteristic. Two particles are a specific distance form each other because of the interaction of the spatial characteristics of each of them.

Draw together from among you, those who know the art of seeds with in seed, the art metal working, and the art of counting.

(Translator's note. The ancient text literally translates seed of seeds but the modern term is genetics. The ancient text literally translates counting but the modern term is computer technologies.)

Kobol's children skilled in the art of seeds with in seed draw near and listen.

Jump coils can do nothing by themselves. They need to be submerged in a gelatinous material which I, Zeus, will show the children of Kobol.

The material is comprised of two molecular sized machines, pictured below. These macro molecular machines are made atom by atom by ribosomal translation of genetic instructions. These machines are so small they can not be made by men. They must be made by the activity of genes inside cells.

(translators note today we call these molecular machines, proteins)

(translators note: Thank you to Harvard University for these visualizations of actual macro molecular machines which exist in each of our cells for real. Their actual purpose is of course maintenance of our bodies and nothing to do with FTL. The genetic instructions which build these devises were discovered in our own genome. Our bodies have made these machines for millions of years. Perhaps Zeus did write the instructions?)

The first, Ftl1 manipulates the weak nuclear force of the metal ions within its core. The strong nuclear force is unaffected.

The second, Mot1 delivers tilium fuel and the jump messenger proteins which carry the jump calculations to the jump motors, Ftl1 The vesticule contains the tilium while the messenger proteins can be seen attached to the vesticule.

The time it takes for these walking molecular robots to deliver the jump calculations to the microscopic jump motors is the time it takes to spin up a drive.

The motors push ions together past the point where electromagnetic forces try to force them apart.

The EM generated by the coil does nothing to move the ship to its destination, The purpose of the coil is to change the direction of the repulsive electromagnetic forces just enough to allow the protein machine Ftl1 to repeatedly push the metal ions into collisions near enough to effect the weak nuclear force of their nuclei. The weak nuclear force will attempt to pull their nuclei together which is normally repelled by the electromagnetic force. The force is over come by the EM coil which allows them to be manipulated by the activity of the Ftl1 protein machine.
The protein machine causes the ions to oscillate. With each oscillation deforming the weak nuclear force. The period of the oscillation is at the resonant frequency of the nuclei weak nuclear interactions. This causes the force to peel off like an electromagnetic emission such as a radio wave. But this is not a radio wave. It is a weak nuclear wave. This is the FTL staging wave.

The staging wave's interactions with each particle of matter-energy results in altering the particle's spatial characteristics. The particle's relationship with all matter-energy around it is then such that it is spatially contiguous with the matter-energy of the calculated destination. The FTL travel is complete. Only the flash of light is left as described below.

This weak nuclear force wave interacts with each particle of matter energy that it encounters as it propagates outward from the FTL drive. The speed of propagation is far slower than the speed of light and will be further slowed with each interaction. After it encounters as many particles as it can effect with out dissipating, it still has a great deal of energy. The next particle it encounters will not be effected, however, instead, the staging wave will be exhausted. Its remaining energy is then expressed as photons of light. This is the shimmering light which appears as a ship jumps.

It is good design to place the FTL drive near the forward part of the ship. The staging wave does not move very fast. As the ship moves forward sub light at the time of the jump, the FTL staging wave will fall behind and evenly engulf the ship. If the FTL drive were behind the ship, the staging wave might never catch up to the forward part of the ship. This would result in only a portion of the ship jumping. This movement accounts for why the shimmering light of a jump appears to move along the length of the ship.

To travel from one place to another with out moving, Kobol's children must devise counting machines which find values for all massive bodies an example of which is diagrammed below.

The point of actual rematerization is the sum of the vectors resulting from the calculation of the interactions of the spatial characteristics of all particles of matter-energy and the points of origin and destination. This calculation does not regard mass at all. However, since mass is usually indicative of more particles, a more massive body will exert more influence on the point of rematerialization.

The more particles present, the greater the point of rematerialization will be from the intended point of destination.

The closer these particles are to the point of origin the stronger the point of rematerialization will be pushed further away from the point of origin in each of the three dimensions.

The closer these particles are to the destination point the stronger the point of rematerialization will be pushed closer to the point of origin in each of the three dimensions.

Since the number of particles with out regard for their mass is important a strict accounting of mass is not important. The jump calculation is more difficult because a particle count is needed. And since both the position of origin and destination effect the point of rematerialization in opposite directions and one proportional to its proximity, the other inversely proportional its proximity, a very small miscalculation of the position of even a small body can make a very large difference in the point of rematerialization.

Children, you must find your intended destination point such that after the true point of rematerialization is calculated, it is the true intended destination. The math of this calculation will always produce errors which either put you much closer to a massive body than farther. If a body containing a very large number of particles, such as a black hole, can have a large effect even at a great distance. A distance which would not have a gravitational effect could still be sufficiently close to have a large impact on the point of rematerization. Errors of this sort can not be predicted. They may put you far from your intended destination.

(Translator's note I have not yet translated this part. It turns out that since there are still episodes to air, it would be a good idea to leave some of the ancient text untranslated so that should something new be reveled about the FTL drive, I can "translate" the remaining text correctly)
