It seems to me that the Basestar are very organic. This struck me as strange because any other time the seem to explode. Like a regular ship. And the debris field that they were flying through that was multiple basestar right?

Well we know that the ships are part organic and part mechanical. We see a lot of the ship that is pure mechanics and metal, and a lot of it as organic. The ships are a mixture.

Yes, the debris field was 4 baseships I think, wasn't it?

This brings up an interesting question. Were the original basestars from the first Cylon war built by Colonials? RDM alludes to the fact that the original Cylons were used as soldiers in inter-Colonial skirmishes. It makes sense that the basestars were colonial ships as well. When the Cylons rebelled, they took the basestars with them and the Colonials had to create battlestars to battle the basestars. This also explains the statement by RDM that the Colonials were almost completely wiped out by the Cylons in the first war. Also, if there were ~65 billion humans at the time of the miniseries, how many were left at the end of the first war?

They were either built by the Colonials (in the form of the corporations that built Cylons) or by Cylons under the directive of their owners.

As for the population, they did not have 65 billion people in the Colonies. The population was approximately 20 billion :)
